wheel studs

Post by michaelh712 »

Can anyone help with information and sources where I can purchase new, longer wheel studs (3/4-1") for my 712? My new wheels are awesome, but the center is a flat plate, leaving only 3-4 threads showing. I find many sources online to order studs, but I do not have the specific specs to order.
thanks

Be aware you should not use the factory lug nuts with alloy wheels unless the lug seats are properly cut for them. The Pinz lug nuts are a rounded taper while most standard lug nuts are cut to a flat 45 deg angle.
As for the lug dimensions, they are listed in the parts manual as 14mmx1.5, Steyr#7101343241.
If you remove 1 stud, you can take it to NAPA and they may be able to get the right lenth for you.

Thanks Jim, I always appreciate your expert feedback. I didn't look closely enough at the stock lug nuts to notice the rounded ball ends. New wheels are steel and do indeed have the 45 degree straight cut, so will try new lugs first. Interesting that many of the professional mechanics on this bbs mention NAPA. Growing up, NAPA stood for No Auto Parts Available. Perhaps I'll have to start giving them a try more often.

I think there was a time when NAPA was more Pro oriented and not very DIY friendly. With the interest in personal customization and auto-maintenance as a 'hobby', they've come around quite a bit to the consumer market. I've noticed a BIG attitude change in NAPA now compared to when I dealt with them in the early 70s.
