8 Deg. too much?

Post by SDPintheLBC »

Question for the experts here:

I've just timed the pinz at 8 deg. btdc. I'm using premium and cannot detect any pinging. It's pretty warm, got the hot-air flap on variable, and got the motor nice and hot (as much as I could, runs cool) - no pinging that I can tell. Starts very easy.

Question is, am I pushing it? Runs real nice now. I can definitely tell the difference between 5 and 8.

Thank you
Mark

You can go as high as 10 deg btdc when using premium, but 7 deg btdc is max for regular gas.

I have found that setting timing at full advance is optimum. In my most recent dyno exploration I found the difference between 23* full advance and 28* full advance was 7 HP and 11 lb/ft of torque and thats a lot for an 80 HP engine. Temperature differences were also greater, remember that if you HEAR pinging damage is being done to the engine!

Optimum timing for an aircooled engine is generally at least 4 degrees from the point where it begins to ping andexhaust gas temps are impacted by timing as well.
The test engine loves 27* full advance.

When you drive the Pinz at idle it will be acceptable to use only initial advance for timing settings-

Thank you.

At what RPM should full advance be achieved?

Also, what is the total advance for a stock Pinz distributor? I never check that.

Thanks again,
Mark
