a long visit today

First the tour

The doors all fitted and all with gas struts to hold open - wow gull wing style.

Then upstairs to the Wiring diagram
Image

Yup its all wayed out in red and blue red is 24v and blue 12v then as we go thru it with my switch diagram vs bretts count we have a discrepency I have more in the end we agree looks like my 42 is very very close and bretts 36 could be short..

Back downstairs 1.5 hours later

we have decided

1 month to paint everything except the alloy skin - second paint round

then the fitting of everything including the proposed 6 seats (we are talking 6 high quality customer seats) in the rear and the removal of the doors to be replaced with side rails

The winches and yes he is installing a 30 litre water tank and with our simplicity motto its going to be gravity fed.

THe new target date of mid November is looking good.

Many surprises on vehicle launch to be revealed :)

Next visit I gotta hand over the newly sponsored LED lights - The stereo - the rest of the instruments and the OFFROAD controls switches for the winches and a new albright controller sigh the other one is on a comp truck now lying in the workshop after its rollover in Ride N Seek TV program which im sure you all saw and two wheels.

Next visit should see the floor cut and fitted the water tank completed the dash started the winch wiring etc all layed out and ready to install.

The rear rollbar.

It is looking great! I am curious why you chose to go with gull-wing doors and why so many. Are they intended to serve as awnings?

Cheers,
Greg

Greg yes you are so correct. Protection from the sun and the rain when camping to allow cooking etc and the proposed awning can be put up or left folded away. Hence to me doors were out and even Brett agreed doors out.

We are also designing a way to load in 2 rows of 3 or 4 seats and bolt them down and remove the doors (done) quickly.

We cannot wait to finish it 30 days before the undercoat and top coat another month for the skinning to be completed then the assembly of the winches etc and finally the wiring and shakedown including testing the unknown the cooling system and adding the power steering. 4 months.

Hey Gecko. Nice toys for the truck. You're running 24volt and 12volt, but how are you planning on doing this? Twin alternators or Dc to DC convertor, or something else?
Looking like you're into the finishing phase... keep going!

We are running 12v and 24v alternators we figure the 14B-T has enough grunt to push them without batting an eyelid.

Alternators face each other almost end on end with a new bracket made up to fit the 12v one to the 12v batteries.

I just cannot wait till its finished as we are palnning to take it for a 2 week run into thailand (me and the wife) for a driving holiday with the two small fishing kayaks on the roof we plan to get to chiang mai roughly 1800k from us.

8 August 2013

A long drive to IPOH due to the public holiday traffic. Handed over the 35" Maxxis sneakers, the 4 small LEDS and the 50" LED and the stereo and a strip of LEDs.

Inspection revealed Hi-lift jack holder almost finished. Shovel holder next. Hammock loops being prepared, handgrabs for all ladders done.
Roof for the Radiator and intercooler etc ready locking mechanism to be designed. My seat area has been pushed back allowing my seat to move back 75mm which is huge when you are 6'2".

Inspection of the new AMADA shocks reveals 3" too much travel so looks like the shocks will never work hard.

New sneaker and the removeable entry ladder in place
Image

Image

The positioning of the www.ufilta.com 20 litre water containers roughly in place we will allow for 3 to be stored and removed.
Due to keeping with simplicity no fixed internal tank or pumps to fill it.
Image

The front wall frame is now finished and the hi-lift jack holder is tacked into place. nExt is shovel holder and air filter.
Image

Over all the frame is now finished.
Image

What's left to do well the DASH and Console and the wiring, power steering, fitting of seats, air cond (fitted just needs to be connected How to start and stop the 14B-T donk. 6 seats for customers in the rear and a removeable side rails so that the 4 rear doors can be removed when necessary. Floor to be cut out and boltdown points welded in. Roof to be cut out. The middle doors and panels to be cut and punched out, the mesh for the radiator roof to be fitted

We have divided DASH into Driving needs - OIL/WATER TEMP/Speedo/TACHO/Fuel Volts/AMPS to the right and recovery DASH. Air pressure and vaccum will be above on the roof along with the lockers and 4wd vaccum switches.

Next week I have to deliver ICOM V8000 VHF radio, the remaining gauges and the fridge slides.

and we discovered the 2 200 AMP batteries were dead oh dear there goes $1500rm.

and the final issue - where oh where is the ground ANCHOR going to go.

I been trying to get up there but the workshop has had a vacation and I had 2 weeks off 10 days kayaking and 3 days in some serious Malaysian jungle and now I have to do some urgent work to my landcruiser (4 blown rebuildable shocks, broken anti sway bar, both drive shafts yokes have gone) all from one jungle trip sigh and I have to now finish the remaining 48 kilometers of the 400kilometer kayaking trip this sunday for charity.

I have heard the rear floor is cut out (from someone picking a trailer up) and the front and rear walls and the winches (all 3) are all mounted again and cabling done.

I need to inspect it as the due date is going to be missed I hear.

The water tank is to be built next a size of 150w x 400d * 1700l cm should give us 102 liters it will bolt to the rear panel.

The floor and walls alloy panels are all cut out and bolted down and has been removed so they can continue to work on the steel bits.

Gecko - How did you do the disc conversion? Did you modify the hubs yourself? Could you give some more details please?
And did i see an non-original steering wheel in one of those photos?

The Disc conversion was done by an engineering shop which does these for Volvo Axles here.

Toyota Landcruiser II (LJ77) Front Callipers fitted to the front and Mitsubishi Pajero Front Callipers fitted tot he rear. Shome grinding done to the hubs to make the callipers fit. THen Toyota HUBS fitted with the standard 6 stud. Mitsubishi Triton Rims then fitted to keep the offset the same or very close.

The end result was impressive. Stops on a dime and very easy progressive to apply (soft pedal action) .

You can also do with 80 Series Front callipers I believe it has been done.

My steering wheel is original.

I think I showed a pick of a "restored" C303 wihch had a terrible restore - since the pic the bondi has cracked through etc and water on the floor through the rubber seals and it had I think Toyota RAV4 steering colum or Hilux steerring column fitted. .

Biggest issue right now is the government plan they announced to cull all vehicles over 12 years old off the road. WE are waiting for an aofficial annoucnement after some stupid professor of motor saftey said all cars over 12 years old are unsafe.

They maintain we have 17+million vehicles with 5Million over 10 years old. It sounds liek a ploy to get us to all byy every 12 years "cheap" cars fromt he government protected local cars the PROTONs which are just cheap over priced piles of crap protected by all imported cars having sales duty of 200% or higher..

Hi Gecko,
Thanks for the info, it sounds interesting. Although i dont fully understand how it was achieved. Would you be able to provide some photos and part numbers?
I presume the Volvo hubs must have been machined down?
How are the Toyota discs fitted to the hubs?
Are the discs standard or did they require machining?
What wheels were used exactly? 16x7.5? ET=?
I dont suppose you local shop would ship a kit to europe?

Sorry to hear about the proposed law, its happening all over. Luckily the UK isnt too bad yet, and France where i live currently has a classic car registration scheme.

I dont suppose you local shop would ship a kit to europe? might cost a fortune in shipping.
