It looks like this topic has run out of steam a bit! .....43 votes to date, and holding!

I guess the results are pretty much as expected, but it's nice to see numbers in the UK sneaking up.
I guess the one surprise is that their are not more European owners on the Forum, but I guess with the language barriers (well American's, Canadian's, Brits and Aussies "kind of" speak the same language! ) some other more "country specific" Pinzgauer Forums are the preferred choice!

......Still, it's good to see a selection of international owners on board!

I do not think it is because of the a Language barrier that European Pinzgauer enthusiast do no post on here very often, well I speak for Germany and not France. I use http://pinzforum.kiruna.de/index.php and most of the poeple on Robi's site converse with me in perfect English, better than I in fact . It is just that there is little need for them to use other forums as Robbi's site is so flourshing and active, far more so than on here in fact. It is a very busy site, very polite and usful. They are very friendly and courteous and I have never seen any animosity in the slightest against any members. I just use Google to read and ask questions in English. always some one answers in English, occasionaly some one states that there English is poor and we then both talk in our own language, often as we go on I discover that they are better at English than they think so we then continue in English. I feel very at home with them as I do here even though I am a Volvo owner now, I still keep in touch.

Maybe so! ...... I often forget that in many parts of the world people speak more than one language fluently.

Tradionally here, Australians have spoken one language (Australian .... admittedly times are changing) but I'm often surprised when I meet Europeans etc who are fluent in 2, 3 or more languages.

Me, I'm fluent in Australian and English and I speak some American and a little New Zealand

I do look at Robi's Pinzgauer Forum from time to time, but it takes time reading the posts via Babelfish!

Peter, a kid in an American public school would have trouble with 3 of the 4 languages you speak. The education system in the US has taken a nose dive. If you take a foreign language at school you'd be lucky if you remembered how to count to 10. Grades are meaningless and reflect attendance more than achievement. Even college, I've run across more than what I consider my share of college graduates who can't even put a sentence together, much less write a paragraph or a decent report of any kind,

Example? US History final for 11th graders, not a test, not an essay, not even a speech, but a poster! The text books are filled with entire chapters about Islam and Mohammed, but very little about any other religion, let alone Christianity.

No civics or other attempt to teach them how our government is supposed to work. That all went out the window in the '70's. It is a very small wonder that most Americans can't speak a second language, maybe ebonics or soemthing like that from MTV, but a European language, unless they get it at home, don't bet on the majority of them even being able to say "NO" in Spanish.

Sad, I'll quit the rant now. My last 2 girls at home are being home schooled for all of the above and much much more.

I do not use Bable Fish I just use Google I downloaded there stuff now all I have to do is right click-page info-translate into English and that it. One can either leave the main page as it is click on a page then translate or just translate everything including the main page then everything from then on is in English.

Unfortunately Google does not do Swedish which is a shame for Volvo readers as one has too dig around for a translator which then keeps switching its self off very frustrating. One of the main translators sells software that supposedly automatically does the business but I have not investigated it.

Robi's Pinzgauer site is very good it is well worth hanging around on it. last year I had a family come over for a few days in there 712, they camped on my land and then we did some "Green Laning". This summer 2 more Pinzgauer friends are coming over with a 710 & a 712.

I would like to go back over to Germany some time to visit and join in with some of my Pinzgauer & Volvo Friends.

The Europeans are very good at Language it is a real embarrisment for us as not many British can reciprocate. I only speak English but my wife is fluent in French and speaks some German and a bit of this and that. I have an old friend who can speak practically every European Language including Serb Croatian Russian Polish and all of the rest of the main ones too many to mention and Welsh. He teaches him self but is absolutely merciless and will watch foreign TV for hours he then just drives off in his Landrover at the drip of a hat to which ever country and involves him self with poeple there. His latest Language is Chinese He tells me that he is not fluent but it sounds very good to me. Still it might be double dutch for all I know He has already stayed for a while over there and is going back. he is an amazing guy. He was in the Eastern block before the wall came down, he used to camp in his LR 110. On the roof was an enormous satellite dish which was as wide as his landrover. He would watch Russian and Ukrainian TV on it to improve his skills and get a more rounded opinion of how the world goes around he is very informative on all sorts of world events. Any way he was camping very close to a very sensitive military establishment. he gets arrested for spying. He actualy enjoyed the whole experience of of it. In the end he had them eating out of his hand and telling him about what are the best parts of the country to visit, they then let him go. they just think crazy English. He is immensely tallented. He was told that he could not easily lean welsh but it only took him one year. I do not mean pigeon Welsh but absolutely fluent I have seen him in action on the hills he can rabbit on like a local very fast with lots of inflections. Amazing

Andy, I guess Australia is like the US in many ways.....a big country (area wise) with mainly one language, so in many ways the schooling systems of the past have seen little value in teaching other languages.
I know when I was at school in the 70's I learnt German, but apart from the school lessons no-one I knew spoke it, so over the years I have forgotton most of what I learnt.
I do regret it now because only a few years after leaving school I brought my first Haflinger and then subsequently turned into quite an SDP fanatic ....and German would definitely be of great benefit nowadays.

Most "traditional" Ausies are like the English as regards their lack of additional language skills, although hand signals and "G'Day Mate" can get you out of a lot of trouble.

Funny story... a good friend of mine in the Land Rover Owners Club is English and when he came to Australia he couldn't understand why people kept calling him "mate" .... He kept saying to his wife "that bloke called me mate, but I've never seen him before in my life .... he's not a mate of mine"
We just call him Nigel now!!
