Re: Speed upgrades?
Ahhh, speed and a Pinz ... not gonna happen. Funny thing is that I drive a Ducati in the summer and regardless of how fast you go the same group of vehicles will be with you at the next light. Even plogging along in the 712 with impatient folks trying to get around me we all end up together at the next light or stop sign. Enjoy the ride, have a cigar appreciate the engineering in a vehicle 35+ years old. http://real4x4forums.com/PinzgauerBBS/p ... =13&t=6284#
Re: Speed upgrades?
Eh, I don't care about the top speed in a city situation. Just a highway situation where there are no lights and you do end up getting many miles ahead of the people who drive slower than you do over the course of the drive. But like I said, I want the best off-roading overlanding vehicle I can get, and so far that seems to be a Pinzgauer.
I'll just try to find the quickest Pinz I can find, because the Pinz is essentially the culmination of everything that I seek in an overlander in size, price and performance and then some, minus about 5-10 mph on the highway, which I could seriously live without with everything else it has to offer.

Re: Speed upgrades?
For now I'm in Tucson. The only time I'd ever take the thing on the highway is on road trips. Other than that, a Pinz can make it up to any speed limit in this town. Lots of trails around here.
Re: Speed upgrades?
Another option is the TD trans, works for my needs in my 712. It will go 80 on a slight down hill, makes lots of noise and sucks fuel at high speeds. I like it because it drops my RPM's by 1000 in high gear, reducing noise and increasing mileage at a sane 60 mph. Running my a/c I managed over 12 mpg going to Tucson keeping in the 60mph range. My truck is somewhat "heavier" than most as I like x-tras. No matter what gearing you use the engine will be the limiting factor as power is a bit on the "thin" side on the road. Good luck in your quest.

Re: Speed upgrades?
That price is hilarious, for $3000 less you can get Dave's P80 716MK

Re: Speed upgrades?
It seems a bit pointless - I like my Pinz due to the load capacity - this one has removed most of that

Of course then you'd have to deal with all the cooling problems associated with the P80 owe and the lack of parts. Owe and the possibility of it not being registrable?

But do agree price is on the high side as most pinz owners get into pinz owner ship as there cheap.

Re: Speed upgrades?
No overheating issues, all the hoses, thermostat and fan clutch replaced.
If I had the dough it would be fun to have it. The 716TD is completely different to handle than the gas 710 Pinz.
It also has a better top speed than my 710M.

i dont mean to be a d$%k but this subject it kinda pointless no matter what anyone says this guy want a pinz that can go 80mph, some people learn from experience and others learn from others experiences! i love my pinz the way it is and i got it because of what it is, thats the beauty of this rig its ready out of the box for what it was intended for. i think you should look into a 85 toyota with a camper and a couple of inches of lift and a set of lockers you should be set you'll get storage in the camper and a bed, well over 80mph!!!! and sorry if i sound like a d$%k but i find it pointless! my point of view is if it aint broken dont fix it!

well ... you're sounding like one.
who are you to tell someone else what they should or should not like or want? if he wants a pinz that'll go 80, then let 'em want one. let 'em try and build one. why should you care?
he came here asking for our ideas/help on getting what he wants. and i guarantee you, he does not want an '85 toyota with a lift kit, lock out hubs and a camper on it. if I had posted your response, i'd be embarassed and ashamed.

Re: Speed upgrades?
Indigoth & Cruzoropeza,
I nearly posted a similar comment to Indigoth's earlier. I didn't. But I decided to now, because I don't want to see another thread degenerate into an argument.
Cruzo, you insinuated that your post sounded d$%k-like, so I guess you were aware of how others might take it. Obviously, Edzz agreed with your comments, but Indigoth did not.
As to whether someone could, should, or would try to build a 80-mph Pinz, well, we've all got our own opinions on that, just like we do on all the other modifications that have been discussed on this forum over the years. If you and I don't want to do it, so what? (But I'll remind you that some of those modifications have been pretty successful.) I posted my thoughts on it earlier.
So why am I chiming in? Because the biggest thing this forum offers is the opportunity to discuss our trucks with others, and to explore ideas that come up. If people are belittled for their voicing their ideas, they are likely to either discontinue their efforts, or just clam up. Either way, the entire community loses, in my opinion.
I'm only speaking from experience, because way too many things I've written have been taken wrong over the years. So now I try real hard to make sure that I only insult people when I darn-well intend to. Hopefully, this forum remains a open-minded place where people are free and welcome to discuss even crazy ideas like 80-mph Pinzgauers!

Re: Speed upgrades?
Discussions are great, just trying to save a life. The vehicles platform is shortened , and the average unshortened Pinz is very unstable at speeds above 65 and braking(drum or disc) is marginal at best, especially if towing a trailer or loaded with people.
The market will determine price, but safety to others should also be taken into consideration when looking to go 70-80 mph in a high center of gravity, breadbox shaped glorified 4300lb tractor.
