Having a poor quality winch, improperly rated (a pinz needs 9000+lbs) without being HARD MOUNTED to the front would be much like carrying a pot-metal .22 rifle on the front lines with the bullets stored away in your backpack.

When I purchased my 712, I really thought about adding a winch but a very knowledgeable source (who shall remain nameless) made an interesting suggestion/comment that I'll share here at the risk of upsetting a bunch of folks.

If I had installed a winch, I would then be obligated to help recover and unstick everyone else that I might be offroading with. So this person's point was that a winch would be nice to have for those rare occasions when I got stuck but I would then always be responsible for everyone else's recover everytime and this person's comments urged that I not take on that role.

I think it would be good insurance to have one (I liked the previously spare tire example) but i doubt I'll go to the trouble at this stage.

If you have the option and resources and interest, I think I'd vote for getting one but I agree that a new job description probably goes with the purchase.

At the risk of also offending someone...that is what tow straps are for. I have the feeling that you are a good trail buddy and
would feel responsible for others that are not so trail wise and get themselves into fixes that are beyond themselves.
The winch is for you and your vehicle. Some day when you want to go it alone to get to that secret fishin' hole, the winch could
prove to be a good purchase.

I've done the recovery for others as well. The biggest single use for my winches has been for landscaping purposes,pulling out unwanted trees and shrubs!
