Yes, it can leak down thru the base of the fuel pump and mix with the engine oil that is lubricating the tappet that is driving the pump. I'm not sure how much gas could get into the oil this way but of course any amount is not good.

Repair kits are available from the usual sources or I have a rebuilt pump available if you'd rather not do it yourself.

Hey thanks, I'm going to tear it down for further inspection. I had a 69 chevy El Camino that did the same . The engine got hard to start like the starter was bad. After replacing the starter to no avail I noticed the dip stick was wet about a foot up to the top. I drained about 3 gal of mixed gas. Luckily it didn't do any noticable. damage to the engine.

I keep a spare fuel pump in my box of tools. Better than doing a rebuild on the road. Got it at Napa, but there are two available...one is rebuildable and one is not.
Check the one from Paul, maybe keep it as a spare.

My Pinz works fine with the Fuel Pump PIERBURG - Ref.: 7.02242.04.0 from a Volkswageen Beetle.
It has exactly the same geometry as the original Pinz pump, but cost just around 50 €.

Fuel pump is NAPA PN: M60175.

Pulled from Jims site, so it's reliable.

Current NAPA number is AFP 1071 but is not exactly the same as the previous model they carried. It's listed for a '70 and prior VW Beetle. I bought a pump from Beck Arnley a few years ago and it was garbage so beware of what's out there.

Interesting rebuild article on the VW fuel pump is here: http://www.hotvws.com/content.php?contentID=45
Note that on the VW the top half of the pump is rotated 180 degrees from the Pinz mounting position.
