SAV Flex Exhaust Install Q

I've got the kit sitting on my table. Instructions say to grind down the grooves on the header pipes. Are the pipes long enough to just cut them off flush at the rings? I can rent a grinder if I need one, I guess.

I have never used EI kits for this activity we make our own, have done since 2000.
The ring you refer to is pressed onto the pipe, then tack welded to stop shifting. I have seen the tail section belled out on some headers. i suggerst you foolow the instructions since the new pipe flex section might be a touch on the short side.

If you do make a mistake and cut it too short don't dispair! You can find a male/female jointer pipe from Napa to make up the difference. It smy oild friend Saeed Ali Binthere dunthat !

Thank you, Sir. I was thinking it was cast on there.

Flex Pipe

Hi Todd

I have just fitted one and it is pretty simple. Dont cut any length off the header pipes if you can help it (I needed every bit of length I had). if you get a small angle grinder and grind through the welds the rings will come off, maybe a bit of persuasion with a hammer will be required to break the last bits of weld. I finished off the job with a hand file to finally smooth it off.

I took the header pipes off although I have seen on the forum recently that someone ground the welded flanges off with a dremel without removing the headers.

Good luck

Hi Todd.
I installed the same kit myself. The rings are welded all the way around, so they do take a while to remove. Patience is everything. And as others have said, you do need the full length of the header pipe.

Give the header studs a thorough soaking with PB Blaster and let it sit for a couple of hours. I broke 2 studs and replacing them took longer than the entire rest of the project.

Good luck. You'll really like the decrease in noise.

Thanks all, I guess I'll rent or borrow an angle grinder. I won't have to worry about the studs breaking. I have to tighten mine every 500 km's or so, they are so loose!

I'm hoping it is quieter and reduces some of the exhaust smell, too. Next will be the muffler, it's not long for this world.

Todd, that muffler blew out completely last year on me. I welded it up last summer and I don't know if we talked about that or not. Sorry if I didn't mention it.

You told me, no worries. Your welds are holding fine. It's the rest of the muffler that's getting pretty thin.

Done! Went very well. I did rent an angle grinder for a few hours. That made short work of it. Headers came right out without issues. It really make a dramatic difference in the noise and exhaust smell level. I dont know if it's my imagination or not, but it seems to run alot smoother now too. Two thumbs up on this upgrade.

noticed the same thing on my 712 with the flex couplings. I think the added back pressure helped.
