Compresser install update

My tanks are now done and in, thanks to Andre Swanson for the awsome fabrication/modifaction of my tanks to fit under the bed behind the tail light panels, first we had to relocate the shovel by flipping it around so the blade mount is aginst the panel aginst the tool box, then both tanks were laid out and marked and notched in at the top about 3" in and across the end, we also added 3 extra bungs for a pop off valve an air out and a pressure switch on both tanks, the fill bung was already there, ( by the way they were campbell hausfeld 5 gal air carry tanks $26.00 ea).

The tank notches were fille ith some 3"x6" steel tube that was cut so we were left with 2 L's that Andre welded in place, we then drilled 2 holes in the bottom of the "L" and Andre welded a tab to the other end of the tank to attach to the bumperette bracket, just under the bed, while Andre was welding away I spent my time installing 1/2" copper tubing from the shelf infront of the transmission plate and under the bed, to a brass TEE to go to both tanks using 3/8" air brake tubing, from the tanks again using the air brake tubing, both tanks out put went to a brass cross fitting and from there to a quick connect on each side, one behind the new shovel location and the other just above the gas can.

My compressor takes about 50 seconds to fill both tanks, to 125psi, I have not used them off road yet but will this weekend, so we will see how long it takes to fill each tire and how many cycles the compressor will run to fill all 6 tires, my last air tank with the same compressor took about 45 seconds to 1 min 15 seconds to fill each tire to 65psi.

In all I have about $2000.00 tied up in this set up and it works great ad as a side I can run any air tool I need to from the truck.

I still need to do some clean up like the over spray of the undercoating on the tanks and secure the pressure switch wiring a little better, as well as replace the push air line connectors with ferral type connectors so I dont get the slow leak down.

Eric...Nice install with the tanks, since you have two 5 gallon tanks is there any way to splice in a filler stem in there. Might come in handy if the pump fails and you can air up by another source. If you had smaller tanks I wouldn't even suggest it but 10 gallons it a fair bit to pump up to 125psi with an onboard compressor. Lots of places still have free air, like truck stops, that will reach 125psi and it would be worth a stop to save the compressor from a early grave. In fact those tanks should have come with one built in. Just a thought.

Miles, yeah I got the request, will do when it's installed on Jim's truck, as far as the tanks yeah I thought I might install another fill valve on it somewhere, since I did pick up some inline filters for both tanks, as far as the early grave for the compressor, it probably wont happen, it's an Oasis XD3000, they run them for 200 hours continous at 200psi just to test them and they are fully warranted, I am also going to be doing some field testing for Oasis since to date I am their only customer who has blown a braided stainless steel air line, so he wants me to put some new equipment through the ringer for him.

As far as the filling station air stations, I used to ues them, thats why I got this setup, I really didnt enjoy spending 45 minutes airing up my tires and dropping $8.00 worth of quarters in the box, oh yeah this is California and even the air costs you here.....lol I only know of one free air station and last stop there it was down.

I had a 1.5 gallon tank and it caused the compressor to cycle to many times so thats why I did the 2 5 gallon tanks, besides I am considering doing an air bag system on the truck in the future and having the capacity will be nice.

I also installed my tank in the rear corner. It has been there for some time with no ill effects. I used a tank from an old compressor and cut it down to make the size I needed to fit the location. I found that flared fittings worked the best for holding the system air tight under the vibration of the pinz. My compressor and controls are mounted behind the drivers seat to keep them protected and piped to the tank with an outlet next to the rear reflector.
