Afternoon All, First let me thank Vince for FINALLY confirming my membership to real 4x4 after 4 weeks of trying. So please beware I have 4 weeks of questions built up! Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Purchased a 74 710k with 20k on it. It has the original tire on it and they have to be change ASAP. Keeping the stock rims and have to drive at least 30 miles of highway before I can play (mountain foothills, Ok, it starts getting hilly in GA I would like to have a tire that would give me more top end and be at least a mud terrain. Sizes and brands would be great!

Now lets talk about the tranny whine. Normal? can I tone it down?

Anybody had a top made for one? If so how did it look and the cost?

Sitting in the drivers seat to the left of the dash between the dash and the door the is a white button/swith and it appears to be a screw in fuse holder but not sure. What does it/they do? Any thoughts?

Any part numbers of items (filters, tune up, shocks, seals ect..) for the pinz but able to order/purchase from the local Napa, pet kids, orileys, advance ect.. Might need a new thread for this question??

Factory paint color? Yeah yeah i know it's green and it could have been changed in service. lol

Is there anything I need to change/modifie or look at/inspect as a new owner?

You know guys that my ex-wife asked me less questions than this when we divorced! I feel bad about it! I haven't even took you all to dinner yet ! And by the way if there is something I missed feel free to fill me in on it. Any and all info is GREATLY APPRECIATED! Sean

In the tech section you will find a parts reference list for many of the routine maintenance items. There's a pre-purchase checklist there which would be a good starting point for things to check over. First thing to get is a Service Manual AND a Parts Manual. The link section of the above referenced site lists most (if not all) the dealers where you can get them. Somewhere there's also a link for a downloadable version, not sure how good that is.

-The tranny/gearbox noise is natural. Rhyno-lining and putting a rubber horse mat in the bed will help. Also, you could upgrade to the exec 11 in the driveline and use heavy duty gear oil in the diffs and portal axles.

-The white button is for aux. lighting. Forget it's there.

-Factory color or not, paint the thing! It needs it.

-Modifications that I recommend are; Swapping out the costly and problematic stock ignition system with an electronic one, Put radial tires on it. A 285/75R16 will be slightly taller and wider than stock (and will fit nicely on the stock rims), Change all the fluids (8 gearboxes!) and filters, Flush/bleed the brakes and hydraulic lines, Modernize the tail lights (too low, no reverse, wrong colors), Upgrade the front seats.

Have at least two sets of ear plugs handy. One set for you, another for the passenger! This is especially applicable for those long highway drives to the land of dirt and mud!
OH, and a GOOD set of all things metric tool wise and then some!

Defintely agree with Kiwibru on the tools. T-Lo's, www.mogsrus.com , has a really nice set, the Proxxon #23650 at $199.00. A bit pricey but very good quality.

Also consider the flex exhaust upgrade from SAV, www.swissarmyvehicles.com, #SAV6894. It really cuts down on the engine noise in the cab and also helps the engine run smoother.

Get yourself a Sycronemeter for the carbs, low cost from a Z shop(find it on line), Defenitally install a Petronix Electronic ignition, carry spare spark plugs and when you foul one (you will do this, even on a startup) Learn to change them from under the truck without needing to pull the seats and the dog house. convert to "civilian spark plugs, easy job (SDP has info), takes a little bench time but worth it. Get a 24V to 12 V converter, mount it where the radio power plug is located behind the passenger seat that will give you a place to use a regular 12V timing light plus a good tap for radios and CB's with a proper fuse block. Allways carry a 60" Hi-Jack ( even the pinz has limitations) this will save you from a long walk out after getting stuck. Enjoy the truck, they are AWESOME but the best advice is get to know your truck! I save all info and keep it in a sealed folder( one of those Zip up school binders) in the tool compartment that way I allways have access to it when needed. Enjoy !
