A low idle problem that just started happening. Why?

For no apparent reason, I'm having trouble with the idle on my Pinz. Until this weekend, it would run just fine all by itself once it was warmed up. Now it needs a little "encouragement" to keep from dying while waiting at red lights.

Do I have gunked up carbs? Any easy & quick suggestions for me?

Thanks!

Ditto for me. A month ago it was running great, then 2 weeks ago it was running rough and wouldn't hold an idle, yesterday it was running great again and then when I pulled into the garage after driving around it wouldn't idle again. I was planning to rebuild the carbs during Xmas anyway, but I was also wondering if it is related to something else. Maybe it has seasonal affective disorder?

Sounds like a great idea! I'll send you my carbs so you can rebuild mine too! Seriously, do y'all think this is something simple like a clogged fuel filter, bad load of gas, it needs a can of gasoline additive (Techron?)

Well, here is a poke...
What has the ambient air temp been? Cold? How do you have the air cleaner intake flap set? There is a notch that will hold it semi-closed that may help pre-heat the air if the answer to previous questions is COLD air.
Just something to check along with that pre-heater hose that routes up to the intake. Might as well take advantage of any warm air you need...heck, it might even fix the problem!
HTH.

I'd do a check of the carb solenoids too.

As we're BACK into the 70s, I'll see if the issue has resolved itself with the warmer temps. The solenoid will be my second target.

Related to this issue, is carb cleaner sprayed liberally in and around the carbs a good or bad idea on a regular basis? Any dos or don't would be appreciated.

My pinz does this every time that it is below 40 degrees and I dont let it warm up for awhile before I go but if I let it warm up it's fine, then agian my flap thing is set in the cold only position so mabey change that and see what happens.

I went and double checked the air-intake flap and it is in the "loose" or variable position. This is actually the position that allows warm air in and should compensate for lower temps. Mine only locks into an open position and according to the manual the flap is only fixed if the temps are above 86 degrees. I'll double check the spark before doing anything, and then I'll check the Dennis' suggestions before pulling the carbs.

when it comes to idle issues, expecially if they occur out of nowhere, PinzEod is on the correct path. Check those connections and make sure they are powered up. A couple of bad connections and the truck will not idle very good at all. This is simple to do and is one of the more common problems that we see at least on the trail.

Once the weather warmed up, the problem seemed to go away so it looks like the "flapper" was the issue. Thanks very much to everyone for the good incremental advice on the oter posible cause of my idle issue.

After reading the posts, I thought the description of the problem sounds just like my 710M. The engine just started idling rough and had bad hesitation. I thought it was bad gas, since I had recently filled up. No, the solution was simple, one of the solenoid connections was hanging loose. Talk about a quick and easy repair!
