Following on from "Newbie in the UK's" topic I thought it may be advantageous to start a new topic dealing with Pinzgauer numbers.

Over the years there has been much debate over the production numbers and countries that use Pinzgauers.

For instance it is well noted that:
1/. Austria, Ghana, Nigeria, Oman, Sudan, Switzerland, Tunisis, Yugoslavia, Cyprus, Malaysia, Parkistan, Saudia Arabia, UK, New Zealand & USA use Pinzgauers
2/. Between 1967 – 1990 there were 20,195 Pinzgauers built

Steyr Puch were "quite" open about all things Pinzgauer (I daresay they had a few secrets), but since Automotive Tecknik, then Armor and especially now that BAE control the vehicle, details and facts are few and far between.

SO....What do you know?
What little tit-bit of information can you add to the puzzle?
How many Pinzgauers do various countries use?
ANY information may be pertinant!

* Erik stated in another topic that the US have 230+ Pinzgauers.
* Below is a pic of a Pinzgauer in military guise taken near Elorza in Venezuela.
....both facts that are not widely publicised!

There are a lot of forum members out there with lots of "ears to the ground" so maybe if we can glean a little more info we can build a clearer picture!

I was told that production started in 1971 and that anything before that was a prototype.

Is this true ?

If not, do they look any different?

True....Actual production started in 1971 with 167 vehicles made in that first year, but various prototype and pre-production models were made prior to that date.
According to "Puch Automobile" 10 units were produced in 1967 and an additional 8 in 1969.
An early prototype was photographed in 1965 and there may have been more around that time, but I'm not sure.

In regards to prototypes, in the book "Puch" by Egon Rudolf, one of the early SDP drawings (dated 1964) showed an 8X8 Pinzgauer layout

Question along a similar line. How many made there way to Australia and was it only the 712's :?:

I'm not disputing anything because I don't know. However, the 230+ in the US seems low to me. Just from the "regulars" on this forum it seems like there are at least 30-40 owners and some of them own mulitple Pinzgauers.

Then, if someone has the time or inclination, look at the number of people registered on this forum. Yes, it's worldwide, but from just a cursorary glance, it seems the majority are from the US.

Actually I do hope the 230 number is correct because that just makes my Pinz even more unique.

Perhaps that 230 was new purchases, i.e. military and original civilian versions. I didn't read the original thread.

I can account for 20 local people who have them near me and I wouldn't call FL a big Pinzgauer state!

Andy, Russ, the 230+ are current 716/718's (armoured) in service with the US Forces.
Erik Maybee tells us:
"There's 230 some odd in the US forces 716/718 Armoured The catches were made here in wichita. I've been told that they are making another 120 some for the pinz 2"

As the majority of the privately owned Pinzgauers in the US are ex Swiss Army they actually come under Swiss Military figures when counted into the overall Pinzgauer production figures equation.

I know of 13 in Utah for sure.

How many made there way to Australia and was it only the 712's

Doug, figures indicate 18 in total were originally imported into Australia in the 1970's and 80's, by the official SDP agents.
Those agents were, "Haflinger Sales and Service" which later became "Haflinger Pinzgauer Enterprises" and finally "Pinzgauer Australia" (which was a division of Porsche Australia).

Of that 18, all were 712's except for one, the 710-1.6 hybrid which was manufactured and imported especially for the Australian Military Tender "Project Perentie".

Another 712 was imported privately during that time.
There has "always" been a rumour floating around that a red 710K was brought into Australia by a visiting Austrian film crew and that it remained here after they left, but I've never found it and a series of ad's placed in "4X4 mags" some years ago by a Sydney enthusiast to try and locate the vehicle never eventuated to anything!

Of late a number of Pinzgauers have been imported privately.... around 4, I believe, and most are 710's.
There is also a 718 still in the country which was imported from AT for the 121 Land Tender.

In a town of 2,200 residents, there is a total of 7 Pinzgauers here (3 are mine). All of them are 710M's.

Unfortunately as nearly all the privately owned Pinny's in the US are ex Swiss army they have already been counted in regards to production numbers (as they were originally manufactured for the Swiss)

Any privately owned Pinzgauers that were sold directly to customers or imported via a "customer" not already known/counted, would help!

.... now if you know of any 716/718's that are hanging around in large quanties (that are not already included in the 230+ previously mentioned) or a large cache of non-Swiss Army origin vehicles, that would be great!
..... or better still if the Syrians really do have Pinzgauers (see "Newbie in the UK" topic) then we are really cooking!

Peter, any idea how many are in Venezula or somewhere in Indonesia? Where they 710/712 or 716/718? Was there anything that should have been numbered a 714?

One would think that it wouldn't be that hard to find out if Syria bought a bunch of Pinzgauers. Would a later copy of Jane's have that info?

Now you have me wondering.
