I know that the question of tires has been to death , what tires last a long time on the pinz. ? I know on a older Ford truck they don't seem to last more than 50k due to the camber chainges . Once I get my pinz. I plan on installing some 34" x 9.5 16 swampers . If I could I'd get Simex tires but they aren't availible in Canada . Will the Swampers have any problems with rubbing at 34"

I have had zero issues with rubbing on my 34" swampers. My truck does not have any of the tanks or boxes on it though. My truck has been heavily wheeled.

I used to run 34" Swampers and they VERY rarely rubbed.
I now run 35X10.5" Simex ET's and when the front suspension is compressed and the wheels are turned they do rub slightly, but nothing really to worry about.

But Prof, I thought 34" plus tires on a pinz was a very poor decision and could only result in broken axles from tire rub etc. Oh, wait Im sure you just cruise the mall parking lot like I do.

The RTPT had approximately 34" tires which worked fine under a moderate load. However, the added weight of the RTPT and more severe (moderate for most folks, but the RTPT is a bigger animal) wheeling resulted in not one, but two broken axles due to rubbing the body of the truck.

Trust me, it's an expensive proposition, so make sure that your tires do not rub.

Good point, whilst I've never broken an axle (I know of only one Pinny in Oz that has broken one, and you can see/hear it happen here...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0KGtzb85g4 ) I have had a front stub axle bearing go.
Whilst I concede"rubbing" probably contributed to this damage, in the 10 years of running 34"-35" tyres this is the only damage I contribute to the tyres ..... I probably would have far more damage (both vehicular and personal) if I hadn't run such tyres purely from the extra effort and strain of trying to get up and down the harder tracks

Here in Europe 35" Tires are considered to be the maximum.
They do rub occasionally but really nothing to worry about.

I have seen a few axle shafts break but those were situations
where something had to let go....

are you sure the wheel drives were glued on correctly with Loctite 270?
The centering bolt is not designed to take the stress. I't is just there to mount the wheel drive correctly.

I had two sheared off bolts on a Pinzgauer that was barely
used offroad. Guess what no Loctite was used.
The other ones that I built up myself had zero issues up to
now.

Good point, the actual part that broke was that the locking pin spun around in the housing and destoyed both. Either way, if the tires hadn't rubbed on the body, no damage to the wheel drives would have occured.

I'm up for new tires. So I had the tire store fit 34 * 12.50. just to see. I noticed some rubbing on the tank guard when turning .

Yep 12,5" is definitively too wide at least in the 34"-35" diameter
range.

You are right every hard contact of the Tires with body parts
should be avoided and will result in damaged parts.

But slight rubbing won't do anything.

I checked clearance before the trip, but bouncing around on the waterfall took away the little clearance I had. I had assumed that I might rub a little, but it turned out to be too much.

Operator error for sure, I had ample opportunity to back off the obstacle, but I had made it up there in three different trucks over the past 3 years.

So

33x12.50R17LT

Would be OK?

Would be a problem??????

or is it the 12.5 wide part that is the issue???????

When I first bought my rims I started with 32"*12.50 *17 tires they did rub I bought different springs adjusted the bump stops. Last year and half I have had 33"*12.50 with no real problems. I'll report back in a couple of years how the 34"* 12.50 worked out for me .

When you first bought your rims you started with 32's and they rubbed but 33's didnt??????????? typo ? Or is it because of your spring & bump stop mods?

Yes, 33" did not rub. mainly because of the new heavier springs.
