Long bleed nipple?

My rear left-hand brake bleed nipple (M6x1.00) is rounded and I have to undo it with mole-grips. However, when I took it out to clean it, I notice it's about 50mm long - looks like someone has welded a section in. Is this standard? If not, how does one normally access the nipple?

I use a deep socket. Run the tubing through the socket and use a vise-grip (adj. locking pliers) to turn the socket. Ta-da.
