Using 1.25 OD tubeing in 14 gage for outer rails, 1.0 OD for bottom cross bars. No Bends used just compound cuts and notching.
Tomorrow I pick up the 13 gage 70% expanded metal decking.
On top of that I still need to design and build the feet for gutter mounting.
size of rack is is 138" by 63"

Very nice! Wish I could weld that well - I seem to spend too much time grinding

Paul, boy I got you fooled, trust me I do my share of grinding as well.
I am making the rack 138" which is about 3.5 inches longer then the roof on my 710. I have plans to mount a light bar under it in the front.

Maybe so, but it looks good when you are done.
If you are Mig welding, are you using gas?

I am just using a 175 Miller with gas, I use to have a flux core welder but after switching to shielding gas I fould it to be way easer to weld, and the results were way cleaner.

Welded in the 13g expanded metal today. Took 540 small welds...
Now I need to make the legs and clamps so I can mount it. I was thinking about using 4" x 1/4" bar stock and bending it with a torch. Then for the clamps I was thinking 14ga. Figure 3 per side would be good
Does this seem like overkill/about right/or not enough?

Well not done but I had to put it up to see what she would look like so I put it on my old surf rack.
The rack is 11 feet long but the welded decking only extends 8 feet. I will be boxing in a removable panel for the front 3-foot area, as I wanted to utilize the sub-hatch when it is not needed.

besides the hatch makes a good access point to the gear stored in the front of the rack.

Ed, we will have to connect sometime soon, was down at long beach yesterday and today to do some clam digging and kite flying. Got home around 6 this evening and decided to work on the rack some more. Just finished welding on the racks feet.
Tomorrow I 'll make the clamps and start on the removeable section for above the hatch.

Rack looks great, nice build and thanks for sharing the build pics. Are you going to add any accessories like lights or jack mounts?
