Can anyone suggest a shop for alternator rebuilds?

There are some places in Buffalo that rewind alternators but im not sure if they will take on a pinz. I can do a little digging... its my home town and the folks still own a shop there.

I did get responses from both Jim and Scott. Unfortunately, both said that the price has a huge variation with no positive number until it's done.

I guess it's a crap shoot.

I hope to find the alternator shop in Buffalo and have them take a look first.

How about telling us the symptoms, you may be chasing a bad regulator.
Blind repairs can be expensive, what leads you to believe you need an overhaul?

If you have not smoked the windings, all the service parts are available from E.I or SAV.
Bearings can be sourced locally and updated to sealed permalube type.





P.S. I do have a rebuilt alt on the shelf but it is $475 without good core return.

I hope I did not offend Jim or Scott with my earlier post. I have purchased parts from Scott before and have heard nothing but praises about Jim.

I appreciate the wealth of knowledge the folks on this forum are willing to share.

My symptoms were the facts that there was a knock in the engine and the idiot light on the dash was on.

Testing the output, while idling I was not getting the 28v necessary to charge the system. The knock in the engine turned out to be the bearing in the alternator being shot.

I will check into the regulator to see if that is functioning properly.

For the noise, bearings can be replaced as long as the housings are good, but they are also available. For the flickering light, inspect the brush plate on the back of alt, push down and pull out brush assembly, if they are short then replace them. As long as you have a small bearing puller and the windings are not damaged, it is fairly easy to repair.
Charging system voltage spec is 26-28.8V

One other source of knocking is a loose belt.
