I had heard this as a joke/true story/urban legend, and it was always the US Navy (and in the story I had heard, the lighthouse was in Spain, in the Bay of Biscay...)
But apparently the US Navy officially denied:

It occurs to me that many militaries have the idea that they are supreme. The Titanic comes to mind...knocked out by a chunk of ice.
