I'm fairly new to Pinz maintenance since I adopted the company Pinz. I'm looking to change the fliud in the hubs but I can't find information on where the plugs are for draining and filling the hubs. Anyone have pictures on the plug locations? It's a '72 710M.

John,
you need a maintenance manual. If one did not come in the glove box or the tools, it would be good to order one. don't take out the bottom plug until you take out the top one to verify the level of the hub oil.
Just in case the the top one won't come out. Be a shame to let the oil out and not be able to refill.

Add your location, you may find you have a helpful fellow Pinz owner next door. 8)

LOL I've learned my lesson on that tip the hard way on a VW transmission. Hopefully I find the manual in the storage unit.

So it looks like your about 30 miles from Expedition Imports http://www.expedition-imports.com/ in Vallejo, CA. Scott should be able to help you out with any parts and manuals you need. EI is a valued resource and a forum supporter. :D

I think there are 12 or 13 plugs all together, when you include the hubs
I found that I'm a pretty big fan of the drain plugs that Scott sells at EI
that have a hex instead of an allen wrench. Just about every plug that
was removed and replaced started dripping. I bought 10 plugs and 10
gaskets and just replace them as needed or when I do a fluid change.
If it hasn't been done, you might consider this. They are only about
$5 a pop.

I recently bought a clutch master rebuild kit from EI. I'm close enough so ground shipments are overnight.

Thanks, that makes it obvious which ones to remove.

Hi Guys,

We also like the hex head plugs! However, do NOT use them for the differential drain. If you have a stock plug, or a stock magnetic plug the heads are inset enough that you will not hit the plug if you slide across a rock. That changes if you use the taller hex head on the diff drain locations. In a perfect world you would be using magnetic plugs on the bottom of the diffs. If you can't bare the cost of the magnetics, at least use the originals......

Cliff Notes = Hex Head Bad on Differential Drains.

Cheers,

Scott

Thanks Scott, well noted.

I have changed all my plugs to hex heads a few years ago... Any perspective of seeing EI propose a line of Hex head Magnetic plugs in the near future? :-D

I put several earth magnets on my oil filter rather than use a plug. Anyone have input on this ? Have done several oil and filter changes since attempting this and have found no
fines in the oil. Had not thought about the diffs and would be interested in solving that issue...magnetic plugs. Where and how much. This vehicle is 40+ years old and I'm sure
something is wearing. Not a help for brass bushings though.
