I have been following this thread very closely and apart from the emotional outrage posts I note some of those constructive actions being taken to restore the status quo.
I posted last week a run up to getting an E compliance in Colorado for a post '81 rig. I didn't expect to get an comments on it frankly emissions and mechanical compliance doesn't worry too many until faced with a the dilemma of refusal to register or license.
Having spoken to authorities in Colorado last week I discovered during the conversations that the Steyr and other grey market vehicles are being spotlighted for compliance in general and I got quote "These vehicles do not comply with Fed Safety standards and in some case cannot comply to certain EPA requirements and fly under the radar screen. Due to their small numbers it's up to the State legislature and Div of Motor Vehicles to decide to act or not. Gov Ritter is going to make announcements soon on emission reductions we'll see unquote".
Then the bombshell, quote "I believe Wisconsin or one of those States over there is tackling the problem, we are going to see how they get on & get some of this "crap off the road' unquote".
Food for thought!

OOOps no customer bashing now
Geez, it's kind of like evil looking weapons! No matter they are semi-auto clones they must be evil. Looks military to me, must be evil. Besides, so old, it can't possibly have any safety features not to mention it must pollute so much. Now lets see, GMC or Chevy trucks from 1950's? 70's Ford and GMC pickups? (I could go on but you get my meaning...) Oh what a rats nest, might as well ban all old vehicles, especially if they are O.D.! Evil, evil...

If this does progress nationally I would have to seriously consider moving my ass to another country!!! No joke. Big government has just gotten to big for its britches.

Plenty of room out here Miles, (Australia is roughly the same size as the 48 contiguous United States with only 21 million people) and you can register and use your Pinny without any problems!consider moving my ass to another country

Jesus! Dennis, I almost replied when I saw your emissions posting the other day, to say that "at least you guys can still license yours out there". Maybe that thought was premature. Did ya ever feel like someone's got their nose too far up your orifice? I hate to sound paranoid, but it's getting creepy feeling around the old U.S.A. lately. (remember, just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't watching you.)
It is REALLY difficult to understand the resistance to these vehicles and all the bad-mouthing about safety equipment and EPA bs. It's not like there are a WHOLE BUNCH of these trucks out there, racking up millions of polluting miles. I drive mine a LOT and maybe put on 1000 mi./yr.
How about all the home-built cars, built without the benefit of a metalurgist or design engineer, yet get inspected by any cop or even a corroner!! How about the ATVs that drive Wisconsin's trails, many of which run ON THE ROAD for various portions of the trails. What about the manure slurry trucks which operate on our roads with NO LICENSE, but rather as a non-licensed tractor. Or all the actual farm tractors that get to drive on our roads without any license, tail lights, reverse lights, etc.??What about all the antique vehicles without even seat belts??
Yesterday, I got into my 1994 Toyota pickup and noticed that it had no air bags (like my Pinz), three point belts (like my Pinz), etc. OK, my Pinz has no side light markers, but.... My point is that even '94, DOT approved, etc. vehicles have little or no better safety features than my '76 Pinzgauer!
Do I sound frustrated and angry? Well, I am a bit of both. I am also keeping my patience, for the most part. Any change in government seems to proceed on a glacial time frame.
As far as our problem here in Wisconsin, we have gotten the attention of several elected representatives. WisDOT is doing further research into how to license HMVs here. We have received encouragement and support from a wide range of former and current military people. Time will tell.
Dennis, thanks for sounding an alarm over the moves afoot out in Colorado. I agree with you that these actions seem insidious and threatening to our lifestyle.
Is it just me, or does it seem like we've somehow lost control of our own country??

Undys, I'm not sure we ever had control, it's just that the veneer is off. Big money and the perpetually in power bureaucrats and minon's actually control the process. Big money and special interests decide who will be allowed to run for office in the first place. How many ordinary people, like most of those who contribute here, do you think would ever be approved by either the Democrat or Republican parties to run for office on a national scale without pretty much having sold their soul to the party first?
The political appointees that are just figureheads for the various agencies are there as part of the spoils system, which doesn't offically exist. The petty bureacrats which survive through boot licking from administration to administration are the ones who fill the figurehead's brain with their own version of how things should be.
Enough of being cynical and preaching heresies and I'll get off my soapbox now.
Good luck on your fight.
Andy

Aye Dennis, me mate. My wife's got that CD, she does. T'will be a cold day when there's no Guiness around MY pub! Makes me want to be back down in County Cork hoistin' a few......
Thanks, Paul
Eric, The older I get, the more I am afraid that you are basically correct. I''ve always tried to be less cynical and more trusting, but I'm not sure how well that's working out. Maybe I'll have to run for office.....

ProfPinz....I've heard it’s really hard to get citizenship in Australia. I guess I could get back into product design and apply for a job there if that’s still a way in to the system. I would much rather just prospect full time but that’s not a great way of showing your ability to be self sufficient and a vital member of society. Plus I've heard that any gold found is property of the government with a finders fee given at government controlled rates? It's been a while. But yeah Australia has always been on my mind. I'll see how the elections go here in the states.

Hey Miles, I don't know too much about gold prospecting, but I do know they haven't found "Lasseters Reef" YET!
It's a fabled story from the last century about a huge seam of gold that was found by a bloke lost in Outback Australia.
http://www.no-big-bang.com/lassetersgold/index.html
Nobody knows if it is true or not, but millions of dollars have been spent over the years trying to find it! .... Hmmm, if I found it I could buy that new 718! (NOT the ugly Pinzgauer II variant
)
PS.....It must be a design thing, but there seem to be a fair few Industrial/Product Designers out there who own Pinzgauers
