Product liability insurance question? (not pinz related)

Post by russ »

This is definitely not Pinz related but I was wondering if any of you have any experience on getting product liability insurance. I have created an electronic wireless voice activated launch controller for trap and skeet and am trying to get a quote locally.

My website is: http://www.precisionclays.com

I don't want to begin selling until this last item covered.

thanks,

russ

Russ
I have the Do all launcher and wobbler with foot remote. How well does the voice integrate to the Do All launchers? I find the foot control a little difficult to use but like the remote control.
When you start to sell these drop me an email or keep us posted here.
BTW don't know much about porduct liability insurance.

Erik, would like to get the information. That sounds like the right insurer for what I'm making.

I'm very glad to hear fellow Pinz owners have the same interests!

I designed the launch controller to work with the do-all. It replaces the remote cable and works pretty well. Check out the videos. It also works with other traps from Champion and Atlas.

The Do-All launcher throws the furthest of the launchers I've used. It's cycle time is a little slower but that's why I support two launchers, so you can also put a Champion or Atlas out to throw faster following pairs. :D

I'll keep you updated.

Hey Russ,

Had a small business for about ten or so years on the side producing tooling for vacuum forming RC (10th scale remote control ) car bodies. Believe it or not I had to have product liability insurance? Had to write out a step by step process (with photos) for what I did for the agent / underwriters to get coverage. A friend and I had a leased shop that we worked on the side for these sorts of projects. The insurance company charged us a minimal fee / year around $66.00 ? It's sad to say but in my case if someone was at a race and a car came off the track & hit someone the layers would do a blanket lawsuit

Eventually I gave up the whole side work thing as I was working seven days a week late at night in addition to ten or so hours for the day job.............
Just get in and go....

You may find that equipment used in close proximaty to firearms may jack your rates pretty substantial. If it is an add-on to an existing general liability policy it may not be that much additional. Quote it and see where it falls. For many "startups" an LLC, or S Corp may be a cheaper option if the budget is not their to cover the product liability.

No experience in your product line, but you would be amazed at the costs for things such as custom 20 passenger off-road tour vehicles :) 30% of the total cost of a vehicle is not unheard of.....not to mention the costs of engineering reviews etc.

In todays society of no personal responsibility EXPECT to be sued no matter what, no matter how un-reasonable, etc.

Cheers,

Scott has some good points.

I have a small business that employs 48 people under a S corp. I still carry 10 million in liabilty insurance. Employees, customers, pets, and things from outer space. Then theres the attorney you have on retainer.

I better stop here before I get carried away.

Good luck and if you have the vision, others will see it too or they are just blind.

Thanks everyone for the advice! You are all a great resource for ANY kind of info!

I spoke to Brent at the insurance group you recommended. He is helping me get the appropriate insurance. He's already sent it off to the underwriter! I owe you one Erik! Not only that but Brent indicated that they currently insure a clay launcher manufacturer, one which I support with my device. He said he would mention my product line to them. Nothing like networking.

I have some protection being an LLC but I have taken notes on all your advice and will bring it up when I discuss insurance and with my attorney.

First off russ you owe me nothing its what the forum is for thank you tho. networking is the key to anything. you may also want to ask them for some contact # on some of the hunting preserves and country clubs as well the biggest one around here is flint oak which is rated five star they have 40 to 50 clay stations.

Thanks Erik. Actually my first product is focused on personal launchers and isn't really meant for clubs as it doesn't discriminate the local shooters commands and other noise on the field as well as it should.

That being said, the guys at the club today took the launcher through it's paces. They put it on random and voice activation and had a ball. Way more successful than I even anticipated. Using the random setting they created a new Skeet game! It was fun to watch and nearly as big of an initial hit as the wobble trap when it was first installed!

Seeing that has inspired me to work out some of the details to support their new game and add it into the club controller I will eventually make. I love mixing two of my hobbies, clay shooting and electronics. Some day, Lord help us, I'll mix all three, clay shooting, electronics and the Pinz! :D

Thanks again,

russ

Good for you Russ. Go give 'em hell.

New game. Mount the thrower in the back of the Pinz. and do drive by skeet. There just mixed all three.
Thank you,
