Paint Time

OK Paint time!
I know I have seen a few posts concerning paint. I have tried the new rattle can paint from SAV. I have used it to restore the cage and a few other interior areas. I plan on using it to paint some of the under carriage too.
• How close is the SAV paint that to the original paint?
• Is the original a semi gloss too?
• Now I want to paint my wheels before I get my new tires mounted. The number RAL 6014 has been posted several times. I am guessing that this is a good match for the original and that if I give that identification number to a body shop they can make me up a gallon or two? (Do I need that much?).

while I am not a big fan of using powder coating as much as some (too difficult to repair) the wheels are a great place for it. The clean up is much easier and retains the color better after being in the elements. I would also consider going black on the rims. Looks good when truck is cleaned up IMHO

does anyone know what to spec if you want to get your whole truck painted? maybe i'll just pick a close totally flat od.

The original Swiss Pinzgauer paint is the RAL 6014 flat (neither semi-gloss nor gloss finish)

Wouldn't you want to stick with the factory OD green if you wanted to keep it stock? Otherwise, you might as well paint it blue with flames if you don't care about keeping it stock.

I want to keep it stock. I noticed that the original label on the SAV rattle can paint has the RAL 6014 ID. Their paint seems to be a semi gloss. It does have a shine to it. Anyone else use the paint can verify this?

My SAV spraycan is also semi-gloss, but it seems like the protected areas on the body (under the tarp or license plate) are also semi-gloss

No offence to SAV but I tried a few cans of the paint that they're offering but have defaulted back to the Krylon flat green camo shade that looked closest to OEM "Pinz" green. As someone posted previously, if you use this paint (VERY commonly available at just about every hardware store in the US) eventually, you'll have a Pinz all in the same shade of military / camo green.

Probably not "authentic" or completely accurate but this group (as a whole) doesn't seem too adverse to tweaking these vehicles to suit our non-military applications and that includes paint.

I bought a few cans of the SAV paint. It is very close to the original color, comparing it to the unfaded paint inside. It almost seems more glossy than the original, but that could be due to dulling by age.

The paint covers very well and dries quickly.

The Krylon doesn't match the original as well and is very flat. It covers well though and is alot cheaper.

The mud stains are VERY hard to get off the flat paint, if that matters to you. I think a truck painted in either would look fine.

i takined to sarah in parts today and she says their paint's flatness depends on temp and other things. not sure what all could affectr that but she says it is not semi-gloss, it is flat.

now i'm looking for ir reflecting yellow olive flat. krylon might do me, tho.

I use the Krylon Camouflage paint. Inexpensive, from WalMart. Looks good when the whole vehicle is the same colour, even if it is not the exact military shade. Easy to patch up the occasional ding or scrape.
So far I have only used it on the outside, I'll get around to the inside next winter when I do not use it so much.
As paint can be a problem through the mail, getting it at a local retailer works best for me.
