ATL Pinzgauer 718K TUM(HD) 6x6 FFR (aka The Green Grail)

Well, the introduction was done in the Flying Dump Truck thread because that build is responsible for this find. Now, I’m starting the Pinzgauer’s own dedicated thread.
Some repeated pics from other threads, but all will be in this thread from now on.

This is an extremely low mileage (262 miles) UK manufactured 718K, but what the Austrians I guess called a 758 (for the UK manufactured Pinzgauers).

Unlike SDP made TDs, this has a VW 2.5TDI engine ( the 5 cylinder version of the VW 4 cylinder 1.9TDI)
4 speed automatic, also Anti-Lock Brakiing System (ABS), Electronic Braking Distribution (EBD) and Electronic Traction Control (ETC)
And as a FFR ( Fitted For Radio) has a 2nd set of batteries in a battery box in the inside the left rear door and a junction box on the right side.
A small 250w inverter was mounted below the junction box

And the best part is I can actually be the one to break the truck in

It's just that I see a nut on the steering wheel and no horn button or wiring for such.

First off, this truck found me.
BEFORE S&S bought ATL, they had the North American sales rights for Pinzgauer and this was S&S only sales demonstrator.
I had found a friend within BAE that enjoyed my resurrection of the FDT and with discussions of various vehicles and the Steyr history, and one day I was made aware of this Pinzgauer and it's impending liquidation.
A true story of being in the right place, at the right time

Horn buttons in the stalk are not all that uncommon. It is far easier to have a lot of wires in a loom than fish a single wire up the column.

As funny as this sounds, it is a new vehicle and needs to be broken in.... not broken
The first times it has ventured onto the road, it drove like a new vehicle and the engine behaved like one that hadn't been "exercised" and needed to get into it's "groove", but it still seem to be faster than the Pink Cow ( with a manual trans). At this point, my intention is to taken it easy and loosen it up with a lot of short trips and not push it.
Like anything new, you get familar and comfortable with it before pushing the limits

I've done so much writing about the FDT here and on SS that I don't remember where some of the info was printed or not.
But when the FDT was first shown and pictures were sent back to contributors and followers, one week later I received an old trade show packet (1/2" thick) with the complete product line of Stewart & Stevenson and 2 CDs. Talk about an eye opener.

I just removed the rub rails to be resprayed and to wash and wax the body behind them.

I'm also trying to find a place for my ipod and speakers.
Bagpipes and regimental marches scare the hell out of people

Tonight I began the tedious job of removing the doghouse.
Fewer bolts than what my SDP 716 had, but a lot more work .
I wonder if the ATL Pinzes with the 2.4TD had this or the SDP doghouse?

The opening towards the rear of the doghouse is for checking motor and trans oils and for the power steering reservoir.

And I found my coolant lost. Unfortunately, I didn't see this until I uploaded to the computer, but it doesn't matter. The front shroud, radiator and intercooler needs to be removed to get into the tunnel.

The coolant leak isn't as bad as it may look. I have never been able to find a drop of coolant under the truck ever. So removing the cover did point me to one of the items that needed to be dealt with eventually. Talk about dumb luck!

And yes, it looked like the truck spent most all of it's 262 mile life in the mud hole proving grounds
