Winch Question

I have an opportunity to acquire a new Warn 80907 (Severe Duty 18K, 24v) winch for small fraction of the MSRP. Less than I would have to pay for most of their other 9-15K winches.

I have a 710M with a nice winch mount.

My question is, is this just a ridiculous winch for the 710. I do intend to replace the cable/fairlead with rope/hawser to save on the weight. I know people have them on 712’s.

Normally I would not consider this winch for my 710, but the cost makes it worth heavy consideration. But I don’t want is to have some big, oversized monstrosity on my front bumper making me look like I am compensating for something.

Thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I put a Ramsey Profile 9500 24V on my 710. I also eliminated the controller
and located a heavy duty Contactor in the side of the passengers footwell
to keep the grill more open for air flow. It's a pretty small footprint up
front and the weight is about 80 lbs with a synthetic rope.

What your looking at is considerably heavier and I would assume the
planetary gear housing is pretty large. But, Warn is cheating a wee bit.
That winch only has a 4.5hp motor geared low to 315:1. That's how they
get the pull. To contrast, the Ramsey is a 5.5hp 138:1. So that Warn
may not be as large as one would think for a 18,000 lb pull. It's going
to be very slow though.

So maybe the things to consider are: Weight, potential Blockage up front,
spooling speed versus the bargain it may be.

I'm about to spring for a 2'nd winch for my 712 and might just get another
Ramsey Profile 9500 or perhaps the next size up.

You make a solid point about the dimensions. The Warn M18 is a beast. Significantly larger than the Ramsey Profile 9500. But I an actually get it cheaper than the Ramsey by a fair bit.

Price is not everything though.

I'd make it look as pretty as possible in pics and post it on various platforms and see if you can make enough to buy a better winch. 18K is just too big. It would be easy to screw up your front-end structure if that thing gets near stall in a heavy pull, etc.. plus the weight and size issues mentioned; that's a lot more weight for a Pinz frame to deal with. My M8000 set-up was under 70lbs on my last rig and that's the winch I recommend to everyone or go up to the 9000-9500 or a Husky 10 for the 712's. You are also looking at much more expensive syn rope having to go to 1/2" and more issues with snatch blocks (depending on model) and so on.

That sounds like what I am running. With synthetic line, it's under 90 lbs total. Mine was off an MRAP military vehicle. It has the over-current control on as well. It is a fantastic winch. Bullet-proof.
