Looking for advice on new version or old style version of starter for my 1974 710M.

I've had 5 Pinz 710M's and used this starter in 3 of them. Much lighter in weight and much easier to install. They also spin the engine faster for quicker starts.

Paul is spot on! I have the EI gear reduction starter in my 710
and a stock Bosch big boy in the 712 -- big difference between
starts.
BTW don't toss your old one, get it rebuilt. Getting rare and who
knows how long EI will be souring the reduction starter.
The only thing I toss these days is used oil
