Flex Extension

Post by SAM. C. »

Hi All

I would appreciate a bit of advice please. I have been trying to fit my flex pipe extension this afternoon (it is one of the spiral wound ones from SAV). I have ground off the old flanges neatly and it slips over fine. The problem is that the flex pipe appears to be about 1/2" too short. Obviously the manifolds are in the same place, and the big bolt at the top of the heat exchanger is as far forward as it can go but in order to get it to meet up with the mating face of the heat exchanger I have to pull the flex extension so far back that I can see the end of the bottom manifold pipe through the compression slots in the flex pipe. Surely this cannot be right can it? I tried to see if there was any stretch in the extension but there seems to be hardly any at all.

I have been considering elongating the hole for the heat exchanger bolt so the whole exhaust assembly can come further forward, but I am not doing this before I have checked with everyone here to see if I am doing something wrong.

Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers

Sam

Hi Sam,

I was able to stretch (extend) the flex portion of the pipe in order to get it to fit. It is rather hard to pull out, especially in that position, but it did eventually extend enough to make a very good fit with no air leaks.

Hope this helps-

My experience with exhaust systems has led me to believe the best way to attach them is to have the joints welded. Put on the clamps as best you can and take it to an exhaust shop to have them welded air tight. They won't slip off while driving and can still be removed at the heat exchanger flange.
