Hub Seal Leak Signs?
What are the tell tail signs of a hub seal leak?
My 72 710M has been down for repairs/upgrades for the last month. Last weekend I noticed oil leaking from the right rear hub. It appears that it may be leaking from the drain plug. With the hot weather here it may have built up some pressure.
I pulled the brake drum off to see if there was any signs of oil leaking on the inside. I couldn't see any on the inside which is where I believe that a hub seal leak would be.
Any information would be appreciated.
Also, has anyone tried fiber washers in place of the copper crush washers? I changed the oil in my transfer case and I wanted to replace the copper crush washer on the drain plug as it looked, well, pretty crushed.
I could not find the appropriate size copper washer but I did find some high quality fiber washers. I took the copper washer from the filler/inspection plug and put it on the drain plug as it looked much better and used the fiber (fibre?) washer on the filler/inspection plug. So far it hasn't leaked but I haven't driven the truck anywhere yet.

I may have just partially answered my own question. I removed the inspection/fill plug on the hub and it was accompanied by a healthy "CHUFF" sound not unlike an old hit or miss engine along with a spray of oil.
I'd still like to know what to look for in case there may be a hub seal leak.
At a minimum it may be time for one of those hub vent kits.

Hub Seal Leak Signs?
Bruce,
is the oil anywhere near the small hole on the back of the portal, is so it is probably an internal set of seals, had to have Jim L. do a repair for me on that last year on my passenger side middle axel, parts were about $50.00 I think, call Jim and talk to him about it and get the proper size seal #'s from him so you can oder them from SAV.
as to the other seal (crush washer) I had a similar leak on my oil drain plug, it leaked a lot so Jim suggested I use a thread seal, Permatex makes a tefln based thread sealer, spread a little on some of the threads and the leak stopped.

Bruce...If its leaking from the plug thats not so bad. And yes there can be a build up in pressure from rising temps. As for the fiber washers, they may work but I would stick with the copper crush washers, due to diffrences in expansion and contraction rates. If they are the fiber washers I'm thinking of, they are a very stable material, but best used in a controled enviroment.
You can get the copper washers from NAPA #704-1364

Thanks for the NAPA part number for the crush washers.
The guys behind the counter at my local NAPA store cringe every time I come in looking for Pinzgauer parts. If I can give them a part number from the SDP-Pinzgauer site exchange list it's OK. Otherwise, they have to dig through their shelf stock of similar parts looking for something to fit since their computer system doesn't list Seyer or Pinzgauer. They do seem surprised how ofter they do have parts that will fit a Pinzgauer.
They didn't have anything close to the crush washers in stock last weekend but at least they can be ordered with the part number.

A little off the main subject but relating to copper washers, this is the kit I just bought. It has all but two of the sizes needed for the pinz.
Kit includes:
20 6x10x1
20 6x12x1
20 8x14x1
20 10x14x1
20 12x16x1.5
20 12x18x1.5
20 14x18x1.5
20 14x20x1.5
20 16x22x1.5
10 18x24x1.5
10 22x27x1.5
6 26x32x2
$24.99 each
Shipping is $12.00
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Copper-w ... 0134161456
I ordered two, shipping on the second set was just $1.00 more. If the auction has ended just do a search he relists the item quite often.

bruce...and anyone who has forgotten, lost the info, or never knew of the napa parts numbers chart,
on jurgens (sorry j, no umlauts...im completely out again!) sdp-pinzgauer repair site there is a very handy conversion table that lists parts numbers for most typical items on the pinz. bulbs, filters, etc.
http://www.sdp-pinzgauer.org/html/parts_reference.html
that link isnt exactly clear as it takes you straight to the page, but thats under the technical section, under 710-712, under miscellaneous, under part reference.
i printed out a few copies, keeping one in the glove box, one in my other vehicle, one at work, at home etc...
a great site with a bunch of info. thanks again jurgen...

Erik....No I have not had the time to compile a list but am planning on it when time permits.
If I had a place to store it I would love to get a wrecked pinz to part out for spares.
