Detachable Winch

Post by NC_Mog »

In talking with a fellow employee from the the west coast, he told me of a detachable winch he runs on his Toyota. He took a typical receiver hitch style detachable winch mount and fabricated a 'female' tube with a ring that fits his pintle hitch. While the winch will hang down till the there is tension on the cable, it raises up and swivles around to line up with the cable.

Negatives with this concept on a Pinz pintle?

I figure since that pintle is usually the recovery point anyway if you are the one being "unstuck", that idea sounds reasonable. The thing to watch is your pull angle, making sure you do not apply force at an extreme angle. I would visualize the winch as a trailer tongue, if the angle of your pull is such that your trailer would be jackknifed, rig a stand-off pulley to improve your angle. I try to stick with 30^ angle or less on such pulls. The same with the front.

I too prefer to see them on living animals but i am a predatory animal that is a meat eater. besides these guys were in an area you will never get to so you won't miss seeing them. 6 miles by horses from where the pinz was left. plenty of their cousins are still around close to roads for tourist.
plenty left to see , strict game laws and limited seasons make sure of that .
saw 2 yesterday on road to my house.
holloween night had one on our deck smashing and eating our 5 pumpkins. see 2-3 / week on our land near our home.
191 killed on roads by vehicles this year since july first. in local area (Kenai Peninsula ) probably 1000 hit by vehicles statewide. have been heavy snow years that the train between anchorage and fairbanks would hit 5-10 daily over 2-3 month winter that is alot of animals
the moose meat and salmon are major part of our meat. better for you than chemically enhanced beef. at least six families eat meat from those moose.
to quote a billboard in Canada

Wow, that lower one is huge! See moose almost every day here, but only seen a few that big. Sadly I do see alot of them victims of road kill.

Nimrod, Your are lucky some of use consider that a hunt of a life time. Anthony, there are around 2000 wrecks a year around here do to are over population of deer. Hunters help control the population numbers. Also most farmers have now created hunting leases to help pay for property taxes, and get them through the winter months it is pretty good for are smaller towns economy.

Hey guys
I thought I would chime in on this.
This summer past I spend a sojourn with my in laws in Northern Idaho. My brother in law lives on a mountain he owns. The diet is all all wild meat mostly Elk and Venison with "yer mashed taters". My wife grew up on a similar diet until she left home for a job with TWA and no-one bought supermarket steaks.

They don't do that today either. Frankly I can't blame them when compared with the fatty feed lot cattle dosed with hormones most Americans grab at the supermarket. AK carry eating and enjoying!

todds112- actually both are medium size , my son shot the 51-1/2 incher from horse back ( did not even start a rodeo) and his partner got the 56 incher a couple days later. i was in Colo. deer hunting at the time. it does look like there is alot more that 4-1/2 inches difference but there isn't. the guy that shot the bigger one has gotten 4-5 alot bigger, i believe his largest is 68"
the intention was not to hijack the thread, just to show the winch on my machine

Just to flame a little. Is it the deer / moose/ etc that are overpopulated, or is it us? I'll bet they don't think they're overpopulated.

I'm not dissing hunting, it is much more limited than the mass killings inside a slaughterhouse, and it's regulated. I'm a hard core carnivore, I have no problem with eating meat or killing it for food, but I always found the statement of deer / moose or other game being overpopulated somewhat funny.

We've (humans) have done that too. Deer were practically extinct and expansion of water sources, hunting regulations, etc. have brought deer back to the point where they have expanded their range and repopulated areas where they once were scarce. The populated areas (humans) won't thin the herds that no longer have predators around to keep their numbers in check and they're sooooo cute that the political ramifications of bringing the numbers back inline with available habitat are too much for politicians to swallow.

Old ideas about hunting bucks only and the new trend to quality deer management all add to the overpopulation of deer in both urban and rural areas.

What most people don't realize is that if deer aren't controled the population will expand until it collapses on its own. That is not a pretty sight.

In many places in Europe hunting has always been the priveledge of the rich. Many place in Europe are so crowded with people that hunting is not practical. It isn't hard to see where Anthony is coming from.

It is a balance thing and in our hurry to play God we often overlook everything it takes to keep things balanced and then we have to deal with the unintended consequences.

But, venison sure is good.
