Gear & case level Plug???

Hi All

I need a clarification which is the level plug in the images for the gearbox & transfer case & what type of oil used for the gearbox, transfer case, differentials & the wheel hub.

I went through the old threads posts but i didn't reach to a clear info.

It's a Pinzgauer gas engine.

First, everything uses 90wt GL5 gear oil except the transmission, it uses 90wt GL4 gear oil(2qts).
On the transfer case picture, #1 is the fill plug, the drain is in the center on the bottom.
The transmission fills through a plug in the top till it spills out of plug #3(level plug) in your pic, do not try to fill it through the level check plug
Same rule applies to diffs, fill through upper plug hole till it comes out of the lower plug.

I changed all the oils some days ago, but I did not use GL4 in the 2 gearboxes.

There were lengthy discussions in the german Pinz forum on the pros/cons of the different qualities and there are concerns of using modern GL4 or GL5 oils.

The GL4/GL5 oils are great in the diffs and the wheel hubs, but for the gearbox/T-case the recommendation is to stick to GL3 oil (there is even a sticker on the housing to use 'mild' oil).

GL3 oil does not have the modern (aggressive) ingredients which may attack some plastic parts and seals. So instead I ordered a few litres 90wt GL3 from an oldtimer shop.

I had a bit of a difficult time locating GL4 on this side of the "pond", let alone GL3!

Has anyone seen GL3 over here? The only thing I could find here in Canada was Pennzoil GL4, and I had to contact Pennzoil to find a distributor that had it in stock.

Hi Bob,

I think you better search with the smaller manufactures, the 'main stream guys' don't care for niches.

Over here in Germany this was quite easy if you look in the oldtimer/vintage car or agricultural supply websites.

Isn't Miller an american manufacturer?

Coastal brand GL5 90 wt (from Autozone) has been verified as compatible with yellow metals(thank you Mog list archives) and can be used for all gearboxes in the Pinz. In Europe, Shell Spirex 90 wt is available.

Now I'm a bit more confused than usual. I thought the problem with using GL5 in the transmission was that it is too slippery. Did I miss something along the way?

Some GL 5 oils are corrosive to yellow metals(brass syncro rings and thrust washers).

In Europe, some products from the Miller Oil lineup are offered by Frost in UK (www.frost.co.uk).

Their "Green Gear Oil 90 - GL1" is apparently designed specifically to "exclude the EP additives which can harm yellow metals"...
