Original price of Pinzgauer

Post by og »

Does anyone know (with some degree of confidence) what was the price of
Pinzgauer 1 (say 710M) in late 70's. Of course price varies with quantity,
so say 1000 vehicles. I assume that is approx quantity Swiss purchased.

I have a number of "communiqué’s" from Steyr Daimler Puch from the late 70's and 80's but the most applicable states the following...

SDP letterheaded pricelist dated 10.2.1982 with the following costs in Fr (Swiss Franc's I guess)
710 M - Fr. 57,200
710 K - Fr. 62,600
712 M - Fr. 66,800
710 K - Fr. 74,200

That same year I was offered a 1977 710M with 9,500km, ex factory for Fr. 35,500

The first Pinzgauer (712M) was imported into Australia in 1975 (which I now own) and at the time that model sold for $16,500 Aus.

I don't know the exchange rates on the above years in relation to the US dollar.

Taking Profpinz's figures and applying a 1982 CHF/USD rate of 2.0303 (source http://fx.sauder.ubc.ca/etc/USDpages.pdf), that gives $ 28'173 for a 710M.

Using http://www.measuringworth.com/uscompare/ to compare it in today's money, we get a rather broad range:
between $54,974.53 and... $123,464.39  depending on the index or indicator used (5 different readings)...

This website advises to use the "GDP per capita" index for consumer goods and commodities, which gives a respectable price tag of $94,146.50 in today's money, still for a 710M.

Well considering a new 718 was around $200,000 Aus in 2007, I guess those costs are probably pretty reasonable.
