Did it lock up can you rotate the wipers manual.

Smoke? Pull the cover see if the spring isolator didn't finally wear out on the brushes. And the spring didn't just fall onto the armature.

Once you pull the cover off if there is a spring attached to the rear of the motor then it's not what I'm talking about. I used a braces rubber band after my spring got fried.

Same thing happened to me.

I had to buy a new motor and yes I agree... very expensive.

Good luck and hopefully it is not fried so you can fix it.

I think that Thilo at Thilo's Ultimate Offroads rebuilds these.

I have repaired a few of these in the past. If you wish to have it repaired, just send it to me and I'll see what parts it needs and give you an estimate before repairs.

Replacement motor

Post by blackstack »

I have an original equipment motor that runs just fine but the faceplate one of the "ears" cracked...I bought a replacement but as i say the motor works fine except that it rocks because of the broken (ear)...I have made a doubler plate that I think would work but if your can just use the faceplate from yours you would have a perfect repair...You can have it for the cost of shipping plus whatever you think is fair (I don't expect a big price)...I can send you pics if you want.

Well Blackstack was kind enough to sell me his spare motor and with my old face plate it works perfect but only with 3 wires instead of 4. Am I missing something? Can anyone tell me the correct wireing? Jim I still plan on sending you my old motor for possible repair. Thanks again Blackstack.

Mine also blew smoke and locked up yesterday. How different is the Unimog 404 motor from the Pinzgauer one? Would it be possible to use the parts of the former to fix the latter? Has anybody installed the conversion offered by SAV?

Is the bracket they mention the original bracket as installed in the Pinzgauer? Easy/difficult to isntall?

the motor in my 710 never worked from the day I got it. Everytime I turned on the motor it would smoke until the breaker would pop. I finally took some time to look at it and found the armature was hitting the outer magnets. A simple adjustment, some cleaning and all is great now. I have another one from another owner who described the same symptoms. The armature also rubbed hard in a couple of places. Once again a simple adjust and clean and it works great.

4x4pinz....That's some good info, thanks for posting it.

Any chance you could post some pictures of the armature so it's easier for everyone to understand the process you went through?

I installed the SAV conversion...mounting used the original bracket plus a supplied strongback strap. Also had to enlarge one hole and drill one hole in the original bracket...took about half an hour for the job.

This link has pics of the installed unit
