Looking for a new rig and I need some direction

Post by Abrumley »

Hello all,

I recently sold my beloved Toyota fzj80 "got married" and am finally on the hunt for a new rig. I've always loved unimogs and pinzgauers but have zero experience with them. I'm certain this question has been asked many times so I apologize but i need some advice. I'm worried a unimog is simply to large for me so I'm leaning to pinzgauers. I'd like a diesel yet I seem to find mainly air cooled 4 cylinders. Also I am curious if a six wheel drive is better than 4? I typically run smaller trails so I dunno... Please help a newbie out! Thank you so much! Also I'm located in Kansas

Would help to know where you are. Fill out the profile as there may be someone in your area that may be able to help you.
Ride in both, don't be hasty. Get lots of info, these are not for everyone. I have had a Mog and now have a pinz. Be selective.
Get info before making a purchase.
Kansas is a big place, so I've heard.

I know these are not for everyone but I want something very simple, utilitarian, capable and it doesn't hurt if it looks different either. The appeal of portals with lockers is huge!! I searched for months for my cruiser because I wanted factory lockers and I can't go back from that.

Let us know what you want to do, just trails, roads, how far are trails, hardtop, convertible, single cab, doka, work, play only etc etc?
We can all tell you this or that but you NEED to see and hopefully ride/drive one of each type of your thinking of getting.
There are many types of Pinz and even more type of Mogs
Welcome to the forum and good luck!

Mostly trails nearby. On road use occasionally. I think single cab soft top. It's definitely for play and I do occasionally take distant wheeling trips so I need something to fit on my flat bed for long trips. I wish I had the option of driving everything but you don't exactly see these often in my area. In fact I've lived here thirty years and believe I've seen two.

My favorite aspects of my 710m's are the standard transmissions and the air cooled engine. I would shy away from the liquid cooled automatics if I were you.

A few Mogs in Oklahoma City and a very knowledgeable Mogger in Dallas, Tx - Road Trip!
Let me know if you want the guy in Dallas' contact info - he has a 1985 U1300L and a rock crawler 404.1 and he has owned a Pinz.
Once you do that 5 hour road trip you could try to hook up with Andre and test a Pinz (and I think he still has a 404 factory Doka for sale)!
