On a short box, I'd lay a 3/4" 4*8 sheet of plywood on the bed and onto the tailgate. This would help distribute the weight back onto the truck bed evenly , off of the tailgate. The static weight of the Haffy wouldn't hurt the tailgate, but the bouncing of traveling down the road may not fair so well.
Cut a 2nd piece of plywood to go across the width of the front of the truck bed and a couple inches above the bed rail. When you load the Haffy, this will be a stiffener for the front of the bed and a pad ( you may even choose to wrap a shipping pad over the plywood to protect both further).
Ideally, back the Haffy onto the truck from a dock (or another trailer), or any surface somewhat the the same height as your bed ( or even higher). This makes it easier to get the Haf onto the bed without a lot of power, onto a short landing area, and not ending into the back seat of your truck.
Another reason for the plywood at the front of the bed. My Haffy isn't handy to get a dimension off of, but front wheels shouldn't be too far onto the tailgate, and again, the plywood will transfer most all the weight back onto the bed, which I doubt the front tires have 500 lbs of weight on them. Also be sure to remove the top, fold and secure the windshield down.... but if you forget, I have windshields for them.
When you get home, find a berm and drive it off... or for me, lift it off with a forklift.
