Who has replaced a broken Axle?

Post by STPPINZ »

I just want to make sure that I have all parts need to fix a broken Axle. Is there anything needed other than a new shaft that should be replaced? Bearings or anything. I just don't want to be waiting on parts....

Thanks for any info.

One thing I replaced was the split (or torn) boot since you're in there anyway. I also replaced the O-ring on the axle but probably didn't need to do that.

My broken axle was rear right. Broke very cleanly next to the diff as everyone here told me it would. The broken spline came out very easily with a magnet.

I didn't have the correct tool to release the axle housing so instead I wedged cold chisels to spread it and then it came right off. Put it back on the same way but did need to tap (wack) it at the hub to drive it back on. I hit a 2x4, not the hub with the hammer.

Springs in the back were easy to remove, I hear this is more difficult for the front. Hope not to do that one as that axle is more expensive.

Good luck

On my 712 it is the middle passenger. I was under the assumption that all the axels were the same. The are different?

Fronts have a CV joint, all rears are the same.
You just need the axle, sealer for the portal housing, some blue loctite for the housing to stub surface, some brake cleaner and 90wt gear oil.

Mike,

While your there you might want to consider the stop ring too, Jim can chime in on this as we just re-did mine a few weeks back, if it's off replace it is my new motto, also check your wheel seal too since it's off should be 55mm seals and around $10.00 from SAV. any way those are things I think I would just go ahead and replace if I was doing a axel replacement just to save some future work.....
