Valve Guides

Post by Oberon »

Just wondering if it is possible to change the valve guides without removing the heads? I've never done it before and don't want to mess anything up.
Thanks in advance

How do I determine which need to be changed. I get a big cloud of blue smoke at startup, the engine is missing, and I'm fouling plugs. I've adjusted the valves, rebuilt and adjusted the carbs, rebuilt the fuel pump, done a compression test and a cylinder leakdown test, adjusted the timing and nothing seems to help(with the missing engine). It ran like a top when I bought it, and now I seem to be chasing my tail.
Thanks again

You don't give enough info to make a sound diagnosis. Does the engine have any substantial blow by? What were the compression readings dry, and wet? Do you even have intake seals?(you have to look), a lot of trucks have no valve seals .
What spark plugs are you using?
And last, what weight oil are you using?
With the above info, an informed decision can be made

Changing guides also requires a new valve job since the guide positions the valve onto the seat....
