Rausch Creek in May

Post by LibTimothy »

Attention all Northeast Pinzgauer owners!

A Jon Gilbart and I are planning a Pinzgauer off road trip in May at Rausch Creek in PA. We would like to invite everyone to join us.

We are planning the trip for Saturday May 16th. Rausch Creek (http://www.rc4x4.org/index.php) is a 1700 acre private Off Road Vehicle Park with trails of varying level of difficulty from dirt roads, to mud pits, to insane rock crawler trails. It is located off I-81 in central PA near Joliett, PA. There is a fee for drivers and passengers to enter the park. There is also free primitive camping at the park, plus campgrounds and motels near the park. Please see the Rausch Creek web site for latest info.

If you are interested in going along, please post here so we can get a headcount.

Jon,

You might try posting something aboutthis outing on the Yahoo Pinz forum. Andy Funk suggested that for our Big Bend trip next month and we got some additional folks that will be joining us.

Good idea! I think that "LibTimothy" is going to (or already has) done this. I haven't introduced myself or said much of anything yet on the yahoo groups, so I figured I'd defer to him. How about you? Texas isn't THAT far away from Pennsylvania! -Jon

This morning, I was actually putting some additional route details together for our Big Bend trip next months. You know West Texas isn't very far from Frederick, Maryland either!

I hope you get a "decent" turn out for your trip.

I apologize for not posting here first, but I got a bigger response from the Yahoo group so I posted there first. Must be some kind of east west thing.

Any who... This is what I posted on the Yahoo group.
For those interested in Rausch Creek next weekend, Camping will be very tight because of the KOH race on Friday. I think I am going to reserve a tent site at one of the near by campgrounds (Camp-A-While is closer to me) rather than brave the crowd.

I have reserved space at Rausch Creek, but it will be crowded and you may be asked to settle into tight quarters with other groups, and there is little likelyhood of scoring a fire ring or picnic table. (No fires allowed outside of fire rings.)
I think Jon indicated that he is more of a motel guy than a camping guy, and he plans to stay at one of the local motels. Make sure you tell them you are going to RC when you check in, so you get the Rausch Creek discount.

And Texas Pinzgauer, not this year, BUT if things go well Wednesday, I might be able to join you all next year.

Timothy

P.S. I will post pictures of the RC trip next week! I promise!!!!

Trip Report

Post by LibTimothy »

As promised here are the pictures from the Off Road trip to Rausch Creek.

In days leading up to the trip, the weather reports had thunder storms and heavy rain predicted for saturday. This caused a few people to back out of the trip. Which was sad as except for some heavy fog and light rain, Saturday was great.

So only Gary and I showed up for this event. (OK Big Bend will win the attendance award... But we will win the fog and rain award!!!) Since it was only the two of us, there was no one to take pictures. So, sadly there are not many pictures.

Here we are at the camp ground getting ready to head out.

The fog was really bad. Here are a few shots of us in the fog.

Here is Gary going over a bump.

We actually went over some really cool rocks, hills, and off camber trails... but since both of us were driving, I don't have any photos.

Here are some movies of the two of us going over a small berm.

And that is pretty much it. I forgot to take more pictures, even when my pinz died on the trail. It acted like it was starved for fuel. I blew out the fuel filter and she ran for a few more hours. But today she's acting starved again. I'll put in a new filter next weekend.

Lastly, here is me by my pinz on the trail.

We had fun. Sorry more of you couldn't make it.

Rausch Creek trip

Post by Jon_Gilbart »

Well, I feel like a heel for missing the trip, but on the plus side, my Lasik eye surgery on Friday morning went great, and my glasses of 25 years are a thing of the past! I should have done the eye surgery years ago... Anyhow, I almost came up late Saturday, but after my 8 am post-op eye exam and a quick visit to my flooded office in Towson, MD (reconstruction starts this morning, so I had to move a lot of my equipment around and take things off the walls in preparation for the drywall work), followed by the prospects of a 3-hour ride in the Pinzgauer just to get to Rausch Creek, I decided this trip was not going to happen for me. BTW, were the King of the Hammers trials from Friday over or did it run into Saturday? Looks like you guys had fun! Timothy, if you decide to hit the trails again before going to Texas, give me a yell and hopefully it will work better for me the next time around. -Jon

ONE MORE THING--there is a military vehicle show this next Saturday in Aberdeen, MD. I plan on driving up in the Pinzgauer in case anyone wants to come... Here's the link:

RC in May

Post by LibTimothy »

Jon,

Sorry you missed the trip. We did have a great time. I got Gary out on a few trails that he would not have gone on if he looked at them before we set out on them.

The KOH races were over Friday. The race trail markers were still up and we had to wait a few times in the morning while clean up crews worked the areas. The camping area was over-flowing at RC. But since we camped at Camp-A-While we had lots of room.

Any-way, look for Gary down at Aberdeen as he will be there also.

It was great fun. Glad you can now see better!

I may run down to RC one more time before I take off for Texas. I'll let you know what gets decided.

Hopefully the Pinz owners in the Northern VA and MD, DE, NY and PA area will take note and join you next time.

There will be no fog nor rain when we do our trip to the Big Bend region next month. I'm hoping day time temps will be under 100. Evenings should be nice though with low humidity.
