Dakar

The dakar has been run and won for another year and once again the custom built Touareg's have blitzed the field, but many years ago Pinzgauers were used as both competitive vehicles and service backup vehicles for some teams.

OK, glad you brought the race up. I don't know about you, Peter, but up here, we could only get TV coverage of the cars and bikes. I miss watching those trucks run too.

Instead we've got Inez Sainz mambling on about the scenery! If I wanted that crap, I'd have tuned in to Martha Stewart's show.

And anyhow, how many Tuaregs can seat 14? Well?

Still fun to watch. I assume they ran in S.A. for political/safety concerns?

Thanks for the link!

I went over some of the vehicles (trucks and cars) on the official website, and not having followed that closely this race the last few years, I still expected to see a few total amateurs in older but well maintained trucks...

Turns out all the Unimogs are shiny new ones, and none of the Tatras was an 8x8...

I guess this is what is needed for a race that is a lot more about winning now than it was... oh, is that 30 years ago already?

A little bit the same here in regards to TV coverage.
Most Aussies (that DOESN'T include me) are sport mad, so things like the footy, cricket and tennis get massive coverage, whilst events like the Dakar are relegated to the non-major channels.....still SBS have a 30 minute coverage every night which covers the basics. They cover all vehicles, but "somehow" the bikes seem to take up about 50% of the 30 minutes, the cars about 40% and the trucks about 10% (it was a real shame the Tatra had to pull out with a blown turbo).

My view on sport btw, is if it doesn't have a motor in it, or go bang, then I'm NOT interested! :D

Jan, ahh yes, I remember it when it first started! .... I've even got a few "video tapes" in my collection with Pinny's IN the Paris Dakar, either racing or as backup vehicles for the bikes.....I think the Honda team used them.
