GAS TANK - What material - Stainless - aluminum - steel

Post by Jerbearyukon »

I have a fella here that will build me a new tank...don't think I want to go the route of the lining. Anyway what would be best...I am leaning toward the aluminum.

He is also going to make a seperate tank for under the table in my k that will be around 20 gallons and have a manula rod to activate it.

If you have made one can you let me know.

We will pull out the old one and he will fabricate a one to be EXACTLY the same.

I can't get it lined here and after seeing what the last one done I am not interested.....just need to find out what the best material is and I will get some prices.

Sure we could do it cheaper if we did more right

Jer Bear I had an aluminum tank made a few years ago and have had no issues on my 710m. Had it made like the stock tank with baffles, painted to match the truck. If I were doing it again I would remove the jerry can mount and extend the tank.

Andre S. had a stainless steel 36 gallon one made and installed on my 712 with a bullet proof (OK, stone proof) gaurd (doubles as a step to climb over the side).
I love it! The range is incredible, don't think I've ever been able to run it down past 1/3 at a single drive (get too tired of driving the beast for that long).

Will the expanded tank work on a "K"? Won't it interfere with the side door?

I had supports made from 5052 aluminum and I mounted them between the windows in the back.

Still have the one under the body by the main tank though.

I think I will just go with the roof rack and put fuel tanks up there. I also have a rack that goes on the back of the truck in the hitch for stuff...just don't want the tanks INSIDE.

I think I can get atleast an extra 10 gallons if I take of the jerry can holder adn extend the tank that way too...GREAT IDEA.

I'd make the tank out of aluminum not stainless steel. First larger tanks made by coldwar were stainless and they failed on the first or second offroad outing as stainless is not as forgiving as AL. Aluminum will bend not tear like stainless.

So I came up with a solution for my Fuel capacity problem.

I ordered a 50 gallon plastic tank from Cabela's.

It will be mounted right behind my rear seats and then a fuel line will be run to the front to a manual three way shut off. This way I can run off either tank.

I will have to move the back rack up a bit and run the venting etc, but I think it's the best fix.

So I will reline the original tank (have a guy here that will clean it in the caustic tank at the rad shop.

Then I will do the liner. We don't have problems with mods here. This will give plenty of fuel for travelling the yukon...lots of country very lttle fuel stations.

I will take pics when I am done....I have a body and car restorer to give me a hand and he was the one that suggested I go this route. He did the same for his willy's jeep and his boat...they are inexpensive and bullet proof (well kinda)...he has had his in the willy's for years now...no problems

Ps just welding a rack for the roof too....

Could we see some detailed pictures of the fabricated aluminum tank and how much would it cost to have one made. I kinda like the idea of getting rid of the jerrycan. It would also be neat if it could be made to allow for more ground clearance.
