I went thru the same quandary a couple of months ago... I have a Mog 404 that is great to tow anything I want but it is way slow for the occasional 500 mile road trip.
My solution was to get a 1 ton crew cab duallie. I found a 86 F350 crew cab that was not too beat up for $2200. Not a daily driver ...

while you are under there checking out the motor mounts have a look at all of the rubber bushings in the suspension including the shock absorber rubbers... this is very common with all older rigs
